Can you believe this Chip? 3 Years, Baby!

Used 2014-01-18 3-year chip P1180017e

3 Years, Baby!

i had my infamous last drink on January 11, 2011. Today i went to the big AA meeting here in Yeaman and picked up my 3-year chip.

This is what i said.

i could have stayed sober for three years without you and the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. But my sobriety and my life would not be as rich, valuable and worthwhile as it is today if it hadn’t been for you. Thank you for making of me someone worthwhile.

That goes for everyone reading this post as well. Thank you all for making me someone worthwhile.

About Al K Hall

Like a battered drinker or a punch drunk boxer, i am here for another round. For those of you who don’t know me, i’m a semi-professional writer on the rocks and a non-practicing alcoholic (if after 30 years of practicing, you still can't do something well, it's best to just give it up). For those of you who do know me, thanks for stopping by anyway and where’s the ten bucks you owe me? Welcome to my Bar None. A hole in the wall where we can hang out and trade the kind of stories you swap only when you’ve had one too many and either can’t find your way home or are afraid to. Hell, it’s cheaper than therapy and plus the pictures are prettier. Here we’ll crack open bottles and jokes and ‘last call’ are the only dirty words you’ll never hear. Pull up a stool and make yourselves at home.

  3. Congrats on 3 years! That’s an awesome chip and I love what you said. You’re an inspiration to those of us who have recently started on this sober journey.

    • Thank you so much, Andie! And for what i said, well, it came from the heart and i’ve often found that kind of message is universal. i’m not sure i fit the bill of an inspiration, but i do know that i’m approaching this disease with humility, hope, and complete honesty and that’s a good place to begin.

      Keep coming back,

      Al K Hall

  4. hooray for you, this is a BIG deal 🙂 glad you’re out there leading the way! makes it easier for me to follow …

    • Belle!

So nice to see you here. Thanks for your kind words! i’m not sure i’m much of a leader, but what i do know is that my path is all the richer for walking it with you.

      Keep coming back,

      Al K Hall

  5. Miracle!! Happy Birthday! Super neat too that I just started following your blog and this is the first post I’ve read of yours. What a gift. Happy to have found you and look forward to seeing what’s next! My birthday is coming up soon as well. God willing I will turn 6 on Febuary the 4th. I just recently started blogging this past November and it’s been very exciting being introduced to this amazing cyber recovery world! Recovery just keeps getting better and better! Glad to be on this journey with you.

    • Congratulations, Clairey! i’m flattered by the follow and hope you find at least a little of what you’re looking for here. i’m thrilled to be walking this road with someone who has as much time as you, and look forward to reading about your progress as well!

      Keep coming back,

      Al K Hall

  6. Congratulations Al, job well done!

  7. Congratulations, Al! And right back at you… I might have been able to stay sober for my going-on-2-years, but it most certainly would not have been as rich, valuable and worthwhile as it was with you lighting the way for me!

  8. Congrats Al! I am so very happy for you! Thank you for being here and sharing your journey with us. All the best to you and your family in the next year! Woot woot!

  9. Those are beautiful thoughts you shared at your meeting. It must have been a treat to be present. Congratulations on your success and thank you for this post!

    • Glenn!

Thanks for the kind words, brother. i’m not sure if it was a treat or not, but what i do know is that the people there got to see a guy who is overjoyed by all the gifts he constantly receives in sobriety.

      Keep coming back,

      Al K Hall

  10. Miss Anne Thrope

Congratulations, Al. Every year right around your Soberversary I kind of relive the effects of that last bender, and thank God you survived and are now doing so well. So so happy for you!

  11. Holy, 3 years!? Congrats, and I am SO glad that your stupid drinking trick (J/K, it was, what I like to call “drunken logic”) did not pan out! Love and gratitude for you being part of this circle… xx

    • Hello DDG!

Agreed, being here talking with you is so much better than the alternative. Thanks so much for your support and being part of the circle as well!

      Keep coming back,

      AL K Hall

  12. This is so wonderful, Al. I can’t tell you how excited and happy I am for you. This is fantastic achievement! So many of us don’t make it, so for you to shine the way and show us how it’s done and be a useful and joyful and free member of this world…what a joy and gift!

Well done and I am proud of you, kind sir 🙂

Blessings and a big birthday hug,

    • Paul, my brother!

i’m blushing at all the compliments but staying humble. i don’t mind telling my story and if i can make someone laugh either at or with me, then maybe it’s easier to hear. Regardless, i’m just doing what we all do, and most of y’all are able to do it with more tact and grace, but then the world needs sloppy sober people too!

Thanks for your support, man, i really do appreciate it.

      Keep coming back,

      Al K Hall

  13. Very nice words Mr Hall and while I love to accept compliments any time really it is YOU that is making YOU someone worthwhile. Huge congratulations my friend xxx

  14. Congratulations, Al. Love reading your site, and you’re an inspiration to me. You’ve made a big impact in my own sobriety the past 6 months (and counting)!

    • Jason!

Congrats on your 6 months, brother! i’m grateful i’ve said anything that can help you on your path, just like your words here have helped me along mine. We’re all in this together, man, so let’s enjoy the ride.

      Keep coming back,

      Al K Hall

  15. Congratulations!!! What an amazing tribute you are to the blogging world and the AA community.

    Rock on Al!

    • Sherry!

LOL, ‘tribute’ i’m not so sure. Unless you lean like one of those ‘tribute bands’. 🙂 Seriously, your compliments are too kind as i’m just a guy who likes to wise off and poke a little fun at himself and his disease. But having readers like you to share this with me makes it worthwhile!

      Rock on, sister!

      Al K Hall

    • Boat!

Who’s been with me since even before i got sober. Thanks so much for all your help in my sobriety. You’re wisdom, patience, and humor have helped me enormously, and i’m very grateful for you and your help.

      Keep coming back, brother,

      Al K Hall

  16. Wow, 3 years, can’t believe it, it seemed to fly by. Congratulations, you are a hero to many.

    • Moderation!

Nice to see you around these parts. Thanks for the visit and the comment. As for sobriety, well, i don’t have the self control to moderate so i had to go the nuclear option, but i feel so much better i don’t miss it that much.

      Keep coming back,

      Al K Hall

  17. Congrats on 3 years, Al! That’s very awesome!

  18. Hi Al;
    I.m Marc and I’m Alcoholic.

  19. Well done Al. It is good to see your progressive journey.

  20. We luv ya, Al! Congratulations!
